Dear All,
Here's a few points from Ibrahim AlJaida's presentation:
-I think it was very interesting how he separates architecture between pre-oil and post-oil, discusses the importance of the 'Bannai' (builder) in the past and moving towards engineers and architects nowadays.
-He shows us how designs from the past were adopted from centuries ago from places such as: Oman, Zanzibar, Najd, Basra, India and Iran.
-We saw pictures of Qatar from 1937, 1947, when Qatar was practically all desert, and then 1959 roads begin to appear and the change and growth begins slowly. However, we see that in the past 10-12 years buildings have been rising at a fast pace and the society has become multi-cultured.
-I enjoyed when he shows us the modern day buildings and how Qatar is truly trying to preserve its history and culture, places like souq wagef, sharq hotel (which was his design, and one of the best 'Arabian' style hotels in Qatar), and the Mushareib project (you all remember in our trip to Dohaland how Ahmad Almannai explains to us how the process of finding the right architects which could create authentic buildings that were modern yet retained culture).
Overall his presentation was engaging and very informative.
Dalal Al Thani.
