Hi all,
Professor thanks for having Mr.Ibrahim as a guest speaker last class, his presentation was very informative and interesting. He showed us that architecture is a mix of culture, language, and identity. I like that his work focuses on having the architecture traditional yet modern and he tied that back to our identity. I think "Barzan" tower is one of the best in the downtown area, because it is not just another modern design, but incorporates the traditional and contemporary. Also, Sooq Wagif as a celebration of our architecture, it was modernized but still retains a sense of Qatari identity. It is quite astounding that more has been built in the last fifteen years, than since oil was first discovered.
In addition, I liked his point on a shared "Gulf culture" like that of a shared Mediterranean culture on the it's shores. It was interesting to see how many different and far-reaching influences we have had on the architecture in Qatar; from Oman, Zanzibar, Najd, India, Iran, etc.
