Al Jazi -Sons of Sinbad, by Alan Villiers (Book Recommendation)

I highly recommend to everyone to read this book. (especially over the summer!)

Alan Villier's ethnography Sons of Sinbad is a great collection of the Gulf's sea fare lifestyle in in 1930s. The decade is the last of the sea trade that dominated the Gulf economy pre-oil discovery. Villiers record lots of information and details on the economic, geographic, political, and social segments of society at the time. He joins a group of Kuwaiti merchant sailors and their voyage starts off in Yemen to Zanzibar, and finally to Kuwait. He records all aspects of life and describes beautifully the people he met along the way.

The book is a great addition to the knowledge we've gained from our class, and once you pick it up its hard to put it down. :)
